Ointment for breastfeeding: what they are for and how to use

Breastfeeding is one of the most important moments in the baby’s life. Through it, the child can acquire all the necessary nutrients to have a correct growth.

But some children (who are very hungry) may end up sucking the nipple too hard and causing injuries.

Breastfeeding ointments can help prevent or treat this situation. But before using them, the correct thing is to talk to your doctor to see if there are any restrictions or not.

What is ointment for breastfeeding and what is it for?

Breastfeeding ointment is a product that is used to treat breasts with cracks, dryness or damage caused by breastfeeding.

This type of cream helps:

  • Hydrating the skin;
  • In the healing of wounds;
  • In the production of new cells from the nipple and areola tissue.

What are the ointments for breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding ointments can be used both to prevent and to treat bruised breasts. Among the main creams used for this purpose are: Protective Cream for Breast Meme, Lansinoh Ointment Lanolin HPA, Millar, Protective Cream for Breast Cicatricure Maternity and Dermodex Treatment.

Creams can be indicated for several factors:

Crack in the breast

Some of the creams indicated for this discomfort are:

  • Biolab Mater Care Breast Cream : the package is 60g and the product still contains passion fruit oil which helps to prevent new cracks;
  • Suvelan Moisturizing Nipple Cream : it is indicated mainly for dry skin as it contains enough oil that helps in hydrating and lubricating the breasts. The package contains 30g of product;
  • Protective cream for breasts memê : increases the elasticity of the skin, preventing the nipples from cracking. It has no perfume and contains 50g;
  • Millar : in addition to treating existing cracks, the ointment also acts as a preventive medicine. It still does not cause allergy and the tube contains 30g.

Anesthetic

To avoid the pain of breastfeeding, creams such as  Dermodex Treatment , Lansinoh Ointment Lanolin HPA and Cicatricure Maternity Breast Protective Cream can be used .

Anesthetic ointments are indicated to ease the pain caused by fissures and injuries resulting from breastfeeding.

This is because these creams have some substances (such as pure Lanolin), which heal and reconstruct the damaged skin, relieving the pain of the lesions.

Anti stretch marks

The stretch marks are scars that form when there is a sudden stretch the skin. They are usually formed in periods of rapid weight gain or loss (such as pregnancy).

One of the ointments used to prevent stretch marks is Velastisa Nipple Care Cream .

Breastfeeding creams that prevent stretch marks generally have a skin regenerating action, as they have moisturizing oils that prevent the dermis from becoming stretched.

In addition to using medications, stretch marks can also be avoided in other ways such as healthy eating (to avoid weight variation) and hydration with natural oils (such as grape seed ).

How to use?

To find out the best way to use this product, it is best to read the package insert.

In general, just take a little ointment and pass around the nipple, giving a light massage and giving preference to the injured areas.

The ointment should be applied at least 2 times a day, preferably after the baby has finished suckling.

It is worth remembering that before applying the cream, it is important to clean the breasts correctly.

In addition, the nipples should also be exposed to the sun and wind for at least 15 minutes a day during the period the woman is breastfeeding.

Another recommendation is that the use of these ointments starts during pregnancy, around the 7th month. Thus, the cream can act as a preventive of injuries.

Is using ointment for breastfeeding bad for the baby?

Some brands do not recommend using the product near the time of breastfeeding. If this is not possible, the ideal is to remove all the product from the breast before allowing the baby to place the mouth on the nipple.

This is the rule and not the exception. That is, if when you read the package leaflet you do not find anything that says it is safe to stay with the ointment during breastfeeding, the correct thing is to take it off before the baby suckles.

This is because the breastfeeding ointment is a cosmetic cream like any other and, therefore, it was not made to be swallowed or digested by the body.

The vast majority of ointments contain a substance called BHT, which is also present in snacks, cereals, butters and plastics.

The problem is that if consumed in excess, BHT can cause some complications such as:

  • Development of allergies;
  • Liver disease or complications (hepatitis, for example)
  • Kidney disease or complications (insufficiency of these organs, for example);
  • Increased bad cholesterol (LDL);
