Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by changes in blood glucose levels.
The World Health Organization points out that the disease is one of the main causes of kidney failure worldwide.
But one study found that a daily dose of the drug Canagliflozin decreased the chances of heart problems and kidney failure in patients with type 2 diabetes.

This remedy is used to control the amount of sugar in the blood of patients with altered glycemic rates. But frequent consumption also brought other benefits:
- The risk of death from kidney complications fell by 34%;
- The risk of interactions due to kidney problems fell by 32%;
- The risk of cardiovascular accident (stroke) and heart attack was also reduced.
What are the benefits of discovery?
The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) indicates that, in Brazil, about 16 million people have the disease. In the last 10 years, diabetes cases have increased by 61.7%, being one of the fastest growing diseases in the country.
With the new discovery of the other benefits of Canagliflozina, the company that produces the drug has placed an order with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for it to be used to treat kidney diseases.
The researchers believe that the use can reduce 22 hospitalizations for complications from the heart and 25 cases of death from heart attack for every thousand patients who have these problems. But they recommend other studies in the area.
