How to prevent asthma? Eating fish can help, says study

According to the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Tisiology (SBPT), approximately 20 million Brazilians are asthmatic.

Data from the Ministry of Health also indicate that about 350 thousand hospitalizations are made every year because of this disease.

But research has found that the consumption of oils present in marine fish can reduce both the chances of developing asthma and similar symptoms of the disease by up to 62% .

The reason for this would be the presence of antioxidants and omega 3 that are found in large quantities in fish and marine animals.

On the other hand, according to the researchers, consuming vegetable oils in a high way increases the risks of asthma by 67%. This type of fat is present in ultra-processed foods, such as fast foods .

The study was done at James Cook University in Australia, but the 642 participants were from a fishing village in South Africa.

How to prevent asthma attacks?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, that is, it persists for a long period of time. Doctors believe that asthma is developed by genetic and / or environmental factors.

Asthma attacks are characterized by coughing , shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and wheezing when the person breathes.

It is important to highlight that the disease is chronic, but the crises happen when the asthmatic is subjected to some aggravating of the disease. Among the main ones are:

  • Animal hair;
  • Flower pollen;
  • Smoke;
  • Pollution;
  • Cold or thin air;
  • Strong smells (eg paint, latex and shoemaker’s glue);
  • Fungi and mold.

Some precautions can be taken to prevent an asthma attack:

Know your type of allergy

The aggravating factors of the disease are varied. To find out what is the cause of your asthma, allergy tests can be done on some components.

Hygiene

Wash bedding and bath towels weekly. Curtains and rugs should also be washed frequently. Carpets can be replaced with other types of flooring and pillowcases and pillows can have hypoallergenic covers.

Exercise carefully

Mild temperatures are ideal for people with asthma to exercise. The practice of physical activities in very cold or hot places makes it difficult to breathe correctly.

Drink plenty of water and don’t be afraid to slow down or stop for a breath if necessary.

Take care with strong smells

Avoid aromatic candles or sprays with a very strong smell. In some cases, avoid using even perfumes and fragrances that can be aggressive.

Asthma is a disease that has no cure, but its crises can be combated through food and the use of medications. If in doubt, seek medical attention!
