Excessive acidity in the stomach may increase risk of ulcer

Excessive intake of acidic, spicy and fatty foods can cause problems such as heartburn and burning. And, other more serious conditions can arise due to the existence of these discomforts, such as ulcers and gastritis .

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach wall caused by increased acidity in the organ. As this problem progresses, it can turn into more serious injuries, known as ulcers.


Some foods such as acidic, fatty and very spicy types are known to favor several conditions, including the increase in acid levels in the stomach, so the constant and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages facilitates the appearance of this condition.

However, emotional issues can also influence the problem. The production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is stimulated by the nervous system in times of tension, which makes gastric juice more acidic and aggressive to the organ.


The bacterium called Helicobacter pylori  may be one of the agents responsible for gastritis. Present in water or food, it can enter the body and lodge in the stomach, stimulating the production of acid in people with the lowest immunity.

Signs of the problem

The main symptoms of gastritis are: burning sensation in the stomach, bad breath , diarrhea , vomiting with blood and pain in the belly. The stress , together with a poor diet in nutrients can also promote the development of the problem.

What to avoid?

People with gastritis or those more susceptible to it should leave out some foods to avoid increasing stomach acid:

  • Candies, lollipops and chewing gums;
  • Acidic fruits like, lemon and orange;
  • Coffee, soda, matte and black tea;
  • Pepper and vinegar;
  • Canned food.
