Orthoses for wrist and elbow

Wrist orthoses have different objectives. They give direct support to the wrist and forearm by limiting tension and excessive movements of the wrist.

Immobilizing and limiting the movements of the joint can help relieve pain and favor the healing process after surgery.

Properties

The wrist rest sits firmly on the wrist and has a loop around the thumb to prevent slipping.
It can contain a support rod or padding made of soft tissue.
The tutors are lightweight and can cover either only the wrist or also a part of the forearm.
There are different materials: soft suede, polyester or cotton.
Some wrist rests have hooks or adjustable straps with Velcro fasteners to adjust the width.
Some models have openings that allow air circulation and prevent sweating.

Advantages of wrist orthoses

Wrist supports provide necessary support on the wrist and leave the fingers free.
For this reason, the orthosis is helpful in the workplace, where repeated movements of the hand occur.
The rigid splint keeps the wrist in a neutral position and allows the joint to relax by preventing flexion. There are no hand rests designed for the night.

Recommendations
The tension of the orthosis is adjusted by loosening the straps so that it does not fit too tightly so as not to impair the blood circulation of the hand.
There are wrist braces where hot or cold packs can be attached for pain relief.
Wrist rests are available in standard sizes or as an adjustable unit model.
Some wrist rests can be worn equally on the right and left, while others are specially designed for one side or the other.

Note
Consult your GP before wearing wrist support. He or she can tell whether an orthosis on the wrist is required and should be worn or whether this increases the discomfort.
The doctor prescribes a model that provides the best support and gives special instructions on when, where and for how long to wear the wrist support.

Treatment of tendovaginitis by wrist orthosis

Guide

If the attending physician diagnoses tendovaginitis stenosans de Quervain, he recommends therapy, and perhaps wrist support.
You have to put this orthosis on the affected wrist.
The wrist support in Quervain syndrome is a strut that immobilizes the wrist and also the thumb.
This type of orthosis should be worn at work and also at rest.

The doctor may recommend applying ice pads to the hand and wrist two or three times a day to reduce pain and swelling.
Cold therapy should not be carried out for more than 20 minutes and should be repeated 3 to 4 times a day.
You should remove the wrist support only for the ice envelopes.

Raise the affected wrist as soon as possible, even with the support applied. This favors the healing process.
