No and Low Poo: what it is, how to make it and products released

At first, when you hear the words low poo or poo , that desperation hits: “my God, what is this?”. The good news is that it is not as difficult as it looks and the bad thing is that there are several complicated and difficult names to memorize. But don’t despair, we’ll explain everything to you!

What is No Poo and Low Poo?

No poo and low poo are capillary washing techniques that mean  no shampoo and little shampoo , respectively. They can also be called foam – free and low-foam. Its purpose is to wash your hair in a mild or less aggressive manner, excluding or decreasing the use of chemicals such as sulphates, petrolatum etc.

The terms without foam and with little foam stem from the belief that the more foam the shampoo makes, the better it is cleaning the hair, which is not true.

This technique was developed by the English Lorraine Massey, hairdresser and co-founder of the company Deva Curl, which manufactures shampoos without the aggressive chemicals to the hair. She gained fame when she wrote the book “Curly Girl”, which in the Brazilian version became “Manual da Garota Cacheada”.

What happens is that, for a long time, it was common sense that capillary oil is synonymous with dirt, and in fact, this oil contains several minerals that are beneficial to the hair, as they naturally hydrate and nourish it.

Of course, impurities reach this natural oil, but that does not mean that it is completely malicious to the hair.

Therefore, the cosmetics industry has created shampoos with strong surfactants to be able to completely remove capillary oil. These surfactants are sulfates, present in the vast majority of shampoos on the market today.

The problem is that, together with the natural oil, the sulfates remove the nutrients that the oil carries with it to the strands, leaving them weak, dry and brittle. The situation is even worse in the case of curly hair, due to the curved structure that prevents the oil from progressing to the tip of the strands.

This does not mean that straight hair cannot benefit from this technique, but that they do not suffer as much from the sulfate present in shampoos as curly hair.

With this, the objective of the technique is to clean the hair without completely removing the natural oil. For this, it is necessary to give up certain chemicals present in shampoos, such as sulfates, petrolatums and insoluble silicones.

It is important to say that, no matter how popular the technique is, No Poo and Low Poo are patented brands by Deva Curl.

What is the problem with petrolatums and silicones?

Now that you know that the sulfate in shampoos can be bad for your hair, the question remains: what do such petrolatums and silicones have to do with all of this?

It may not seem like it, but these products are very bad for the hair. If you use them and think that your hair is still healthy, here comes the bomb: “it’s a trap, Bino!”.

These products add a thin film on the hair, which gives the impression that it is shiny and healthy. However, when he is washed, it is clear how sensitive he really is.

Imagine that your cell phone broke the screen, so you add a film of glass to it. It is still broken, and when you remove the film, it will still be broken. It is the same thing that happens with hair wires.

To make matters worse, these chemicals are only removed precisely with what we are trying to avoid: strong sulfates. Therefore, if you are going to give up sulphates, you will also have to leave behind products containing petrolatums and, in many cases, silicones.

Difference between No and Low poo

The difference between the two techniques is in the level of tolerated chemicals. No poo bans any aggressive chemicals, such as sulfates, petrolatums and insoluble silicones . Meanwhile, low poo only banishes heavy sulphates and petrolates.

In low poo it is still possible to use some silicones, since the shampoos contain a substance called Cocamidopropyl , which promotes a smoother cleaning, but are still able to remove the silicones.

However, the two washing modes exclude petroleum-based chemicals entirely. Yes, believe it if you want, but even in shampoos oil gives the air of grace.

Co-wash

Along with these washing techniques in and low poo , a method that gained popularity was co-wash .

Co-wash follows an even stricter principle than that in the well . While in the poo only shampoos are allowed without aggressive chemicals, in the co-wash even shampoo is allowed , and a cleansing conditioner is used.

In this method, the hair is washed only with conditioners released from aggressive chemicals and petrolatum. However, there is nothing to prevent the washing in the well from being interspersed with co-wash .

What are parabens and petrolatum?

For those who don’t know, parabens and petrolatum are very common substances in hair products. They have a purpose for being there, but they often end up being harmful. Understand:

Petrolatums

Petrolates are substances derived from oil that create the false impression of health, softness and shine in the wires. However, this sealing layer hides the true health of the hair, which is usually badly treated under the chemical. Some silicones are also banned for the same reason.

Without washing with sulfates, this layer that surrounds the hair ends up accumulating and preventing the absorption of important nutrients for the health of the hair. Therefore, petrolatum is banned from both techniques.

Parabens

Parabens are highly common chemicals in the cosmetic industry, used in order to prevent the proliferation of microorganisms, which increases the useful life of the products.

These substances are not only used in hair products, but also in other cosmetic products, such as moisturizers, sunscreens, among others. The problem is that parabens increase the risk of cancer , being a not very healthy chemical for prolonged use.

It is important to note that parabens are not prohibited in the poo , but are often blocked by users of the technique due to their health risks. To avoid this type of situation, many brands already use natural preservatives.

The most common parabens are:

  • Methylparaben;
  • Propylparaben;
  • Ethyl paraben;
  • Butylparaben.

What is and what is not allowed?

For years, the beauty industry was not concerned with taking care of our hair effectively, but rather looking like they were taking care of. With that, there is a multitude of chemical substances that we do not have knowledge of and that mistreat our hair a lot.

There are so many different chemists with names that are difficult to remember that a good option to not get lost in the middle of so many technical names is to save this page as your favorites. So, at the time of purchase, you can always check the lists below:

Petroleum products – Prohibited in both techniques

  • Petrolatum (Petrolato);
  • Mineral oil (Óleo mineral);
  • Paraffin (Paraffin, Paraffin);
  • Parafina Acid;
  • Vaseline (Vaseline);
  • Isoparaffin;
  • C13-14 Isoparaffin;
  • Dodecane;
  • Isododecane;
  • Alkane (Alcano);
  • Cera Microcristalina (Microcrystalline Wax);
  • Hidrogeneted Polysobutene.

These products can only be removed from the hair with the use of heavy sulfates.

Heavy sulfates – Prohibited in both techniques

  • TEA Lauryl Sulfate;
  • Ethyl PEG-15 Cocamine Sulfate;
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate;
  • Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate;
  • Sodium Laurisulfate (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate);
  • Sodium Myreth Sulfate;

  • TEA Dodecylbenzenesulfonate (Prohibited when present in the composition of shampoos and released when in the composition of conditioners, masks or leave-ins).

These heavy surfactants cause the hair to dry out. They are also the only ones that can remove oil derivatives from the wires. Therefore, petrolatums should not be used, as they create the false illusion of hydration and can only be removed with aggressive surfactants.

It is important to remember that everything that is allowed in the poo is also released for low poo , but not the other way around.

No poo in curly hair

At first, these techniques were idealized for curly hair because, as already mentioned above, natural hydration has difficulty reaching the end of the hair, which makes it more dry.

This difficulty in natural hydration occurs for two interconnected reasons.

First, due to the constitution of the wire. Because it is curly (or curly), natural hydration takes a long time to reach the end of the strands. However, before getting there, the hair gets dirty with the impurities of the environment.

What do you do with dirty hair? Lava! In this wash, shampoos with their sulphates and other aggressive chemicals enter, which, instead of just removing this daily dirt, also remove this natural oil. With that, that beautiful natural hydration never finishes its way to the ends of the strands.

The products released in these techniques clean only what is necessary, allowing the little miners to hydrate their hair in a natural way. In addition, the released conditioners have formulas that really care for the hair, unlike the “normal” conditioners.

No poo in straight hair

As these techniques emerged from curly to curly, many women with straight or slightly wavy hair think that they cannot benefit from it, which is a mistake.

It turns out that straight hair does not suffer as much from dryness as curly hair. However, this does not mean that he does not suffer damage, much less that he does not need to be so well taken care of.

Another important point to note is that those who have chemically straightened hair can and should use these washing techniques.

What happens is that many people think that using these techniques have no effect, since the hair has the strong chemical of the progressive ( botox , relaxation etc.) or that, when performing this method, the progressive will lose its effect.

However, what really happens (in low poo , for example) is that this type of washing leaves the hair healthier and even potentiates the progressive one, unlike sulfate shampoos that end up weakening the process.

So, if your hair is not curly and you are dying to practice these washing techniques, go for it!

Benefits of No and Low poo

Spending years and years taking care of the hair in the same way and now facing another way can be a little impactful. If you still have doubts if these washing techniques are really what you are looking for, find out the main benefits offered:

Fewer washes

Wrongly, some people believe that, by eliminating the use of shampoos responsible for this intense cleansing, the hair will become dirty. In reality, these techniques reduce the need for washing.

What happens is that sulfate shampoos remove so much of the necessary natural oils that the body desperately tries to replace this loss, a phenomenon known as the “rebound effect”.

As these ways of washing do not remove this benign oil, the body does not feel this “desperation” to replace the oil and, as a result, the hair takes longer to get dirty, which reduces its constant need for washing.

Dandruff and oil reduction

The reduction of dandruff and oiliness is closely linked to the number of washes. As explained in the previous topic, the body tries to recover the lost natural oil, making it look dirty more easily and, consequently, the hair is washed more frequently.

With this excess washing, the oil increases and creates dandruff. When we do not change the capillary pH, we reduce this oil in excess and the dandruff stops manifesting.

More natural hair

The hair looks much more natural, as there is no aggressive chemical in its structure. Not to mention its natural hydration, which is as repairing as beauty salons, if not more so.

Disciplined Hair

This technique is well known for giving definition to curly hair, leaving it more disciplined and consistent (famous spring bunch, which does not fall apart).

However, smooth ones can also benefit from it. Discipline takes place through the treatment of dryness repair and allied modeling. For straight hair, the benefits will be looser strands and a more natural smooth look.

It is important to say that the continuous use of boards and dryers can influence the discipline of the hair.

Better response to the capillary schedule

For fans of the capillary or moisturizing schedule, no and low poo are great allies, as these washing techniques help the hair to respond more quickly and effectively to the hydration treatment.

Easy washing

A very common thing in ordinary washing is the tangle of hair, whether it is straight, curly or curly. The “normal” shampoos manage to make the hair tangle.

As the products released for no and low poo are not aggressive in this way, they leave hair soft even when washing.

More brightness

With the correct distribution of natural minerals, the strands gain a brighter appearance, after all, they are healthy.

More savings

The math is super basic. Less washing and less products equals more money.

More hair health

Both techniques clean the threads creating very little (depending on the product, none) foam. With this, the hair does not suffer the friction that attacks the strands.

Frizz reduction

The reduction in frizz is due to a set of factors: changing washing habits, analysis when choosing the products that your hair adapts best and reduction in the need for boards and dryers.

How to wash?

As hard as it is to believe, washing is not complicated, just a little more laborious than the traditional one.

To facilitate the process, we separate the washing into three stages:

Pre-wash

In the pre-wash, the hair must be prepared to receive the products. The pre is used only for those who are not yet adept , as this is where the petrolatums, silicones, and other chemicals remaining in the wires are removed.

In this step, there are two options of shampoos: those with sulfates, since they will remove absolutely everything from the hair, and also the anti-residues.

This should happen only once before entering this world, except for those who use chemicals in their hair. Those that use dyes, botox, cauterization, chemical straightening etc. they must restart the process whenever they undergo one of these treatments.

Knowing this, just wash and comb your hair, remembering that you should not apply the conditioner yet.

Washing

The first time in No Poo

After pre-washing, just apply the conditioner suitable for the technique, untangle the hair and then rinse.

Em Low Poo

The conditioner is also added, detangles and rinses the hair, but only in this first wash. After it, the technique’s shampoo and conditioner should be used .

Drying

For curly hair, it is important to avoid the towel, as they are extremely absorbent. The correct thing is to use the paper towel (no, they are not just for the kitchen), squeezing the locks from the bottom up.

In general, it is important not to rub the wires when drying them, as this causes frizz and, in the case of curly hair, deforms the curls.

Completion

It is at this point that the chosen leave-in or styling cream can be applied. Both must be within the limits of the technique that the person is following, whether in or low poo .

The hair should be divided into four parts and the product is applied gently and with open fingers. If you have curls, squeeze the strands from bottom to top to help with the shape.

Hydration, nutrition and reconstruction

When it comes to that extra care, many people are unsure about how to apply the treatment creams. This is because, traditionally, creams are applied after washing with shampoo.

The good news is that little changes when taking care of locks: the shampoo to be used only needs to be released for the chosen technique.

Ideally, each person should talk to their hairdresser and analyze how the hair is responding to the treatment and the use of the products of the technique.

Stay tuned for the following tips:

For reconstruction

Whenever you do a reconstruction, it can be useful to wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoo.

Hydration and nutrition

Hydrations and nutrition can be performed after co-wash , if the person does not want to use shampoo or is following a hair schedule in which shampoos should not be used during that period.

However, there is nothing that contraindicates the use of sulfate-free shampoo before applying treatment creams.

Homemade recipes from No poo and Low poo

In her book, Lorraine Massey cites some homemade recipes that, according to her, bring benefits to the fans of no / low poo . It is important to note that these methods said to be natural are not scientifically proven and are subject to risks, such as allergic reactions.

Two examples are:

Cleaning with lemon

Select your conditioner, without insoluble silicones, and mix lemon juice with it. This lemon juice must be extracted directly from the fruit, 100% natural.

Lorraine says that this mixture cleans hair even better than shampoo and works as a natural tonic.

Exfoliation with brown sugar

Again, you need one tablespoon of conditioner without insoluble silicones and three tablespoons of brown sugar. This is enough to clean the hair bulb in a deep way, in addition to performing a complete exfoliation.

Two other widely used recipes are baking soda and apple cider vinegar. According to its users, baking soda would have the role of cleaning the hair, replacing the shampoo. Apple cider vinegar can replace the conditioner, softening and softening the locks.

Professional opinion

For everything in this life, there are opinions for and against. And with these techniques, it couldn’t be different.

There are several professionals who encourage the use, and there are those, such as doctor Tatiana Steiner, from the hair and nail department of the Brazilian Society of Dermatologist (SBD), who do not find them so suitable.

According to this specialist, sulfates do help to dry hair. However, a good alternative is to dilute the shampoos with sulfate in water or opt for products without the substance, as cutting the shampoo once works only for some people, says the doctor.

Another thing that becomes common when we talk about the popularization of no and low poo is the growing number of people who use homemade substances to treat the hair. Cosmetology professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), Vânia Leite e Silva, says that making homemade products is a danger.

This is because the homemade formulas do not follow the manufacturing standards. So, there is no way to know if the components are compatible with each other, what the pH is, or if it will irritate your skin.

In summary: we see that it is possible to use washing techniques, but in a wise and gradual way, as, like any other part of the human body, hair must be treated with caution.

Complications

According to Adriano Almeida, director of the Brazilian Hair Society (SBC), if the individual makes a mistake during the wash without shampoo, he may develop diseases.

Some of them are dandruff, seborrhea and tinea capitis . Tinea capitis, also known as ringworm of the head, is a disease caused by a fungus that causes small spots on the scalp. When developed, these spots become inflamed and painful.

The tinea can also cause itching and break the wires, causing them to form small holes in the scalp.

It is not common for this to happen, but there are chances. According to the director, it is up to each one to try the techniques for a period, often going to the dermatologist to see if it is appropriate or not to continue using them.

Tips

For those who are now entering the world of no / low poo , you need to be careful in the way you will manage your hair so as not to end up messing up the processes and harming it.

To avoid this type of situation, check out the following tips:

Avoid mineral oil

Who does not use shampoo can not apply conditioners or other hair products that have mineral oil, because this substance sticks to the scalp and can only be removed with sulfate-based shampoos.

Choose the conditioner wisely

For those who are going to alternate the washings between o / ow poo and co-wash , it is necessary to choose the conditioner wisely, since, more than moisturizing, it must clean the hair.

A conditioner that, in addition to moisturizing, also cleanses, must have betaine amphoteric , also known as Cocamidopropyl Betaine , a substance capable of removing dirt, such as insoluble silicones.

This substance works by opening the cuticle, then removing excess dirt, and only then do moisturizing agents take care of the hair.

Massage

Massage is one of the most important parts. Different from what is believed, it is not how much you massage that makes the foam, but how many chemicals are present in the composition.

Therefore, massage is important because, next to the shampoo – or conditioner, in the case of co-wash -, it helps to open the cuticles of the threads, allowing the moisturizing agents to penetrate.

Sanitize the accessories

Last but not least, we have to talk about accessories. It is essential that the accessories used are cleaned, such as clips, combs, caps, etc.

This is because residues from the products previously used can remain in these accessories, making the effectiveness of the techniques in the / low poo to be put to the test.

When we talk about hair, there is that great fear of taking chances. However, with no and low poo , there is no other way. If you want to use the technique, you need to test the different products and see what best suits your needs.
